Megan's Law
Megan’s Law is legislation that requires those individuals convicted of certain sex crimes to register as a sex offender for life (application to be removed from the registry can be made after 15 years under some circumstances). This registration keeps up to date records on things like address, employment, schooling, etc. Depending on the level of tiering, this information can be public record and available on the internet. Obviously, it is important to keep your name off of that registry if at all possible or to be tiered at the lowest risk level. Foy & Seplowitz has substantial experience working on cases that involve Megan’s Law and we will bring our experience to your aid.
There is a long list of crimes that can result in Megan’s Law. Among those crimes includes the following:
Sexual assault and aggravated sexual assault
Criminal sexual contact of a minor
Luring
Distribution of child pornography
Endangering the welfare of a child
Promoting child prostitution
Any of the above can include serious penalties such as extended jail time, in addition to the requirement of registering as a sex offender after release, as well as parole supervision for life. You can be limited in where you can live and where you can work, among other restrictions. Fighting these charges to the fullest extent is imperative to the welfare of the rest of your life.
